Climate Action
Time is running out.
This is the World Centric Climate Clock.
Open the link and toggle to the upper right. Select the 1.5 degree Celsius indicator to watch the scientifically based estimate of the countdown in real time remaining until the earth's carbon emissions will have permanently locked into the atmosphere a 1.5 degrees Celsius temperature.
Warming will continue to accelerate as long as emissions are not addressed, and increasingly extreme climate manifestations will accelerate toward dangerous tipping points. The Paris Accords agreed in 2015 the urgency for countries together to limit global emissions to a 1.5degree threshold by 2030; in 2024, the warmest year on record, atmospheric temperatures did spike to that level though it is not as of yet not locked in.
The Trump Administration has pulled the US out of the Accords for a second time. Michael Bloomberg has committed to paying the US share of costs agreed to for 2025 for the Accord commitment. Towns and municipalities around the US are signing pledges and statements called "We're Still In". The Town of Queensbury issued this memorandum in 2018 and a copy of it will be posted on this site.
Indivisible ADK Saratoga Climate Team
In the present atmosphere of national political chaos, awareness and urgency around climate action and policy is being sidelined. Worse yet, Federal agencies that monitor and provide climate science data like EPA, NOAA, and the Department of Interior are being dismantled. In New York State, the Governor and legislature are retreating from proactive climate legislation, stalling on cap and invest, slow-walking building out publicly owned renewable energy and hesitating on such bills as the NY Heat Act which would enable renewable installation and reduce consumer costs. Funds from FEMA to NYS are being cut.
Increasingly climate prioritization, action and emergency preparedness must fall to local and county efforts. The Indivisible ADK/Saratoga climate team, in the process of formulating its approach, will maintain strong values regarding both protection of the earth and just transition, which will reflect the mission of Indivisible.org. Through events, trainings, research, actions and letter writing we aim to have a strong role and voice in articulating and addressing such issues as lawsuits, broken promises/treaties with other nations and tribes, pipelines and fracking issues, drilling, permitting, divestment, greenwashing by industry, the role of money and donors affecting legislative decisions, the progress and roadblocks to wind, solar, geothermal and power issues, the Green Amendment, Rights of Nature--- all among a myriad of other environmental issues.
This team welcomes participation as we organize for a late spring forum to discuss our approach to addressing many aspects of this crisis.
Please revisit this page in late spring as we post our mission statement, projects, events, and focus. The team will be looking for a volunteer to step into a leadership role for the Indivisible Climate Team from summer 2025 forward.
This page will include events, resources, reading, research, graphs, links and opportunities for engagement.
