More than 5,000 demonstrate at “No Kings” Rally in Saratoga Springs
As Trump Moves towards dictatorship, local Indivisible group holds peaceful demonstration among thousands of actions across America
Saratoga and Capital Region Communities Join Nationwide Day of Defiance Against Authoritarianism
Saratoga Springs, NY — More than 5,000 people demonstrated Saturday in the No Kings! protest in Saratoga Springs against attempts by President Trump and his enablers to end democracy and establish a dictatorship in America, according to Indivisible ADK/Saratoga, a chapter of national activist group Indivisible.
Demonstrators peacefully protested Trump’s actions including ordering military soldiers into American cities, violating the Constitutional guarantee of Freedom of Speech, use of the federal government to exact revenge on his critics and political challengers, and the use of police in masks to incarcerate and deport immigrants without the Constitutional right of due process under law.
Indivisible ADK/Saratoga estimates that more than 5,000 Pro-Democracy demonstrators from the Saratoga and Glens Falls areas lined the entire business district on both sides of Broadway in Saratoga and then held a rally in Congress Park.
Students from Skidmore College and SUNY Adirondack joined the demonstration, many marching from the Skidmore campus.
““The bonds between a citizenry and its chosen representatives are sacred, grounded in mutual trust and the just exercise of power,” said Skidmore Sophomore Prairie Gunnels. “But when that trust is broken, and power is perverted to serve ambition over duty, the people must speak.”
“Today is a day of solidarity throughout the country of people who are sick and tired of this president who seems to be above the law in essence actually acting like he’s a king, and we refuse to be complacent.” said Lexis Figureo of Saratoga Black Lives Matter. “Soldiers are being deployed in cities targeting black and brown community members ICE is terrorizing kids, parents, and any brown person they decide to. The government has started a war against its own people and yet they call us terrorists because we are anti-fascists but we know that antifa isn’t an organization but an ideology of freedom.”
“Fundamental freedoms defined in the Constitution that protect us are at risk of being diminished or even erased, “ said Lori Dawson of the Saratoga County League of Women Voters. “While the League of Women Voters does not endorse or oppose political parties or candidates, we do speak up when people in power threaten human rights and democracy. Holding elected officials accountable to the public interest is not a partisan act; it is a vital function of a healthy democracy.”
Millions of Americans demonstrated at more than 2,500 locations nationwide, including Albany, Troy, Clifton Park, Glens Falls, Johnstown, Greenwich, and Salem.
The first No Kings Day was June 14. More than 5 million people demonstrated at more than 2,100 sites nationwide.
No Kings 2 Saratoga was organized by Indivisible ADK/Saratoga, the League of Women Voters of Saratoga County, Skidmore Students Demand Action, Skidmore Democrats, Skidmore Environmental Action Club, the Upstate Anti-Fascist Coalition and other pro-Democracy allies
